Two years ago to the day, I took a long lunch and stood froze-nosed on Boylston street as the Patriots rode by atop duckboats, waving at the 1.2 million people who had gathered to celebrate their underdog Superbowl win.
I stood in the same spot today, although it was a bit less chilly, the crowd seemed just a little smaller, and the Pats are the underdogs no longer. The novelty had worn off slightly from the first parade, but there were still smiles and shouts everywhere. It was great to see the guys genuinely appreciating their fans, especially Teddy Bruschi, who was making eye contact with anyone he could, mouthing "thank you" as he passed. He looked truly humbled. All the players were beaming (ok, well, Belichick almost smiled), and sometimes it seemed that there were more cameras in their hands than on the streets.
