[Last Tuesday's Playlist] Boston Accents Farewall Party - Night 2 - DJ Sets

One week ago we were given a communal chance to bid farewell to a Sunday-night radio staple: The Boston Accents local music program that ended when WFNX was officially swallowed by the ACME Clear Channel mega-corp. While the station itself threw its own one-night goodbye show at the Paradise a month back, Boston Accents host Michael Marotta upped the ante by inviting a dozen of his favorite local bands to play over three nights at Allston's Great Scott. Two of the shows sold way out, and the first one came pretty close, which is no small feat on summer weeknights. It was a bittersweet celebration that was, of course, way more on the sweet side than the bitter.

I was honored to play a small part in the partying, along with my DJ partner Jay "Clicky Clicky" Brietling, as we soundtracked the before-between-and-after-band moments of the second show with our own personal song selections. Naturally, we kept things local: Our favorite tracks from Boston-area bands past and present to honor the mission of Boston Accents. I kicked things off after the soundchecks, just before 9 o'clock, playing a set that lead into the Dirty Virgins opening slot, along with another short set before Soccer Mom took the stage. Jay took over from there, surrounding Mellow Bravo and Mean Creek, and you can check out his tracklists over at his place. His sets leaned just a little more old-school, while I mostly stuck to the last decade-or-so, though we both had some outliers (I'll take any opportunity to play Swirlies "Sunn" in public). Some of you may notice a quintet of songs in my set that follow a bit of a theme, so bonus points if you get that...

Soccer Mom on stage. I heart them.
Set 1
Pants Yell! - "Not Wrong"
Wheat - "Don't I Hold You"
Travels - "Smile"
You Can Be A Wesley - "Creatures"
Lockgroove - "Engine Drone"
Charlene - "Ripoff"
The Broken River Prophet - "December Wolves"
Sharp Darts USA - "Turn It On Again"
Ghost Box Orchestra - "Oh, the Moon Hangs Low"
Young Adults - "Impression"

Set 2
Swirlies - "Sunn"
Pixies - "Alec Eiffel"
Girlfriends (now known as Bent Shapes) - "Big Machines"
The Dirty Dishes - "Blur"

  • Again, check out Jay Clicky Clicky's playlists.

  • Kumar's Blizznog has some words on the second night.

  • During their closing set, Mean Creek covered the Replacement's "Left Of The Dial", which they played again last weekend at the Paradise. There's video at the Phoenix, thanks to Boston Band Crush.

  • Daykamp has some photos from the first night.

  • And the rest of my photos of night 2 are right here.

  • Mean Creek finishes up night 2.
