Looking forward...
'Tis a good time to be a movie lover, and a grown-up sci-fi-fantasy geek. Within a month we've got Spider-Man and Star Wars Episode II hitting the screens, Daredevil and the Hulk have both started filming, Road to Perdition arrives this summer (directed by Sam Mendes, the man behind American Beauty), and the Two Towers shows up soon after the Fellowship of the Ring arrives on DVD, with lots of extra footage. How did we end up with this veritable bonanza of comic book and fantasy-based flicks? What's to blame? Coincidence? The success of X-Men? The advances in CGI? I know that has a lot to do with it. Peter Jackson cites advances in digital special effects as the main reason he was finally able to bring the Lord of the Rings to life, and it's allowed Tobey Maguire to swing through the cityscape as Spidey. There's no doubt the same technology will be used with Ben Affleck's Daredevil, and even Ang Lee's Hulk will be entirely computer generated. We've come a long way from the days of Lou Ferrigno. ![]() |
