From Guppyboy's 1994 cassette "Haci Baba" comes the Zach Ward-penned "Fool". I've seen them play the song (and Zach play it solo) an infinite number of times over the last 10 years, and I never tire of listening.
Formed in 1993, and transformed over time into both the Essex Green and the Sixth Great Lake, Guppyboy was arguably the best (and probably the most prolific) band to spring from Vermont in the last decade. So many great songs have come from the hands, mouths, and minds of Chris, Zach, Mike, and Jeff (not to mention Sasha, who eventually joined up, stayed for the ride, and is soon releasing a solo record), not just as a group, but individually and with other projects as well. I was lucky enough to catch the Essex Green on Tuesday up in Burlington on the first date of their eastern U.S. tour. While the Green doesn't include Zach (when he's with them, they become the Sixth Great Lake), he did play with openers Swale, who treated us to another fine version of "Fool". In honor of that, here's the original recording for ya. Enjoy. ![]() |
