Saw an excellent pop-rock show last night at 608 in Summahville. Tender Trap, Sportique, and the Orange Peels played to a mid-sized crowd on a summery Tuesday night.

Tender Trap is Amelia and Rob from Heavenly/Marine Research along with John (who goes by DJ Downfall, and was in MR, too) on bass duties. The beats are handled by a cd player, which played tracks programmed by John for their wonderful new album on K records. I picked it up at the show last night and am already gearing up on obsession. Catchy as all-get-out, and I've always had a thing for Amelia's voice. I've been listening to her sing for more than 10 years or so, since the early Heavenly daze, and she always does it for me. The perfect pop princess to my ears, and she was in fine form last night, with only the occasional dodgy-nasal-spray-induced voicecrack. Or maybe it was the pre-show Denny's meal that did it.

Following Tender Trap was Sportique, in which Amelia jumped on the keyboards (actually, she improvised impressively on the melodica, since their keyboard set didn't survive their trans-atlantic journey), Rob switched over to bass, and a drummer and lead singer/guitarist appeared from the wings. I didn't mind the buzzcocks-inspired vocals at first, but it got old, and the songs started to blend together a bit. Not bad, but certainly not as much my thing as TT was.

Sportique ended, and bedtime beckoned... so we only caught a couple of the Orange Peels 'california-pop' songs, as Matt calls it. Better than Sportique, but not enough to keep me in the club past midnight. All in all, an excellent evening that peaked awfully early.

Down With the RIAA...
Well, this was pretty much inevitable, given the demise of Napster: News: Rest in Peace, Audiogalaxy. Yup, AG is gone, thanks to a lawsuit by the RIAA that forces them to block all content unless they get approval of the artist. In other words, they've been made useless to those of us who actually buy more cds thanks to online sampling. Wonder how long before WinMX or Grokster fall like dominos?
